I fished with Jimmy Menn in the first Texas Trout Series Tournament of 2008.  Our limited scouting time left us with only one spot holding quality fish.  It happend to be one of my favorite spots on the King Ranch shoreline.  On tournament day we drove straight to that spot and I had a 23.5 inch long trout off of a black/chartreuse she dog within fifty feet of the boat and thought man their here!  We did not catch a lot of fish, but I landed another 23.5" trout on the same she dog.  Jimmy had a run of good action which gave us our third and final fish for a tournament  limit of 3 trout.  Jimmy lost a huge trout maybe a 29".  That one would have put us in the money!  We finished 15th out of 50 teams, so a moral victory, but no check.  Next up is the Texas Trout Series tournament #2 in Corpus Christi, TX at Bluffs landing.  If you want to see some big speckled trout weighed in alive.  You need to check out the weigh in on Sat. Feb 2 from 2:30 to 4:00.

Until next time, Good Fishing,

Capt. Joe

Texas Redfish Series

I fished in the May 5th Texas Redfish Series opener in Port Aransas with Ronnie Robinson.  Scouting my favorite areas near Port A did not yield any tournament reds, so we headed south to some proven spoils on the ICW.   We managed a tournament limit of two redfish that weighed 9.48 pounds and 36th place out of 100 teams.  Not what we had hoped, because their are definitely some tournament quality reds in the northern part of the Laguna Madre.  I'll be in Baffin the next couple of weeks chasing trout and reds, then it's time to start scouting Port O'Connor for the second Texas Redfish Series Tournament on June 15.

Good Fishing,

Capt. Joe

I fished in the Texas Trout Series Championship Artificial Lure Only Tournament with Aron Baggett this past weekend.  Our game plan was to stay near Port A on Saturday due to the forcast of 35 mph North West winds.  We managed a tournament limit of 3 trout all weighed in alive for a total of 7.3 pounds.  Not quite what we had hoped for but it kept us alive for day two at just 6 pounds out of the lead in 11th place out of 33 teams in the championship.
The weather was much nicer on Sunday so we crossed Corpus Christi Bay into the Laguna Madre where Aron and I had each been on nice trout and hoped for another 3 trout tournament limit knowing that we would need at least 15 pounds to place high and over 20 pounds to win.  To our dismay all signs of big trout were gone at my "go to spot, a place where four days earlier had me catch three trout at 22", 26", and a 28.5" in less than an hour.  With only a short time to fish we decided to dedicate about half the morning to this spot.  Two hours later we were comparing notes on a 14" trout and a undersized redfish.  We drifted deeper water nearby with a hit on almost every cast but no big trout.  We hit Aron's "go to spot" this time there was tons of small and medium sized bait fish.  Again, we caught fish, but no tournament quality fish.  We fished past the point of no return a headed to Port A satisfied that we had done our best and wishing that tournament Sunday had turned out more like the scouting had on the previous wednesday.

Scouted Port A and Laguna Madre for the upcoming Texas Trout Series Championship Tournament.  Ted Frels helped me scout, and we managed 12 trout near Port A in Redfish Bay in the morning with Ted doing most of the catching.  The biggest trout was 17 or 18 inches long.  We loaded up the boat and headed to Marker 37 to check up on one of my favorite Laguna Madre spots and after a slow start ended up catching three trout between 22 and 28.5 inches long and one nice redfish all released alive.  I have to add that I had the hot hand at this spot and caught all four of these big fish.  Satisfied that I had a few spots with tournament potential we headed in and wondered what the impending weather would do to my tournament game plan.
